Teaching

Wen Ming is available for teaching engagements, both for private lessons and group workshops. Topics that can and will be worked on include

  • Technique – good fundamental technique allows for easier expression of musical ideas on the drumset. Technical topics that will be worked on include basic snare drum technique, inter-limb exercises, strength builders for the motor muscles of the hands, balance, brush work, dynamic control and moeller technique
  • Time – Time is the most fundamental common denominator of all music, except music that is written without a pulse. Drummers need to be able to keep good time, that is not only metronomically correct but more importantly feels good. To achieve this, we will work on metronome exercises, breathing and posture, which has a drastic effect on the time, and relate timekeeping to different styles of music, so that the student will be able to play authentic time in different styles
  • Musical Concepts – through the process of listening to records, transcription and guidance, the student will be taught how to use his techincal ability to best serve the MUSIC and to play MUSICALLY. Topics discussed will include musical interaction, different functions of the drummer in different situations, ride cymbal applications, solo construction, approaching different time signatures, analysis of the greats to further the student’s own musical expression.

Most importantly, Wen Ming’s teaching is geared towards teaching the student how to play MUSIC. Anyone who simply wants to bang on the drums, or to play the fastest drum licks need not apply.

No prerequisite is required except a deep interest in drums and music and a willingness to work extremely hard on the material. For more infomation, please contact Wen Ming at wenming.soh@gmail.com
